NSUMC Preschool is closing and registration information will no longer be given or accepted after February 15th, 2017
North Springs United Methodist Preschool first opened its doors to students as a private Christian kindergarten option because local elementary schools did not offer care for 5 year olds. Over the years, it has evolved with the Sandy Springs community. We’ve been a kindergarten, Parents Morning Out program and now a Bright from the Start state licensed preschool serving age 1-5 with our full day program. At its peak, enrollment was nearly 65 students in 7 classrooms and a bustling extended day program of 20-30 children every afternoon. This school year our enrollment is a busy 36-39 at any given time and extended day peaks at nine children on any given afternoon. Enrollment has declined over the past few years and the cost of tuition has steadily risen across the board as we try to offer a special service at an affordable price.
The NSUMC Finance Committee and preschool board have prayed and discussed options for sustaining the preschool in an increasingly challenging environment. Georgia Pre-K has changed preschool education in the state the past 5 years thus affecting both private and public preschools. Several other preschools in our area have closed due to similar financial struggles over the past few years and the declining number of children enrolled. In light of this the NSUMC Preschool board has decided that the wisest financial choice is to close the preschool after the current school year has ended in May. I want to assure parents, staff and students that our school will continue to operate throughout the remainder of the current school year. Classes will continue to take place, holiday celebrations will occur, and our annual graduation program will be in May as planned. Further, we would like to encourage families to fellowship and keep participating in school programs and opportunities until we officially close on May 25th, 2017.
As preschool director, I realize the hardship this closure places upon faculty and staff as well. As pre-school board chair, it is additionally hard to share this with our congregation which has supported the school over the years. As hard and as sad it is to inform you that our school will close at the end of this academic year we can be proud of the history and accomplishments of NSUMC Preschool. We’ve proudly, lovingly provided care to the children of our community since the late 60’s. Each person who passes through the front door has been touched by the spirit on this hallway. The children bless our lives and hearts as we learn from them as well as teach them daily. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of their lives and participate in building a firm educational foundation for them. Please feel free to email Alethia at email@example.com. She is more than happy to respond to all feedback with respect and an open honest heart during this transitional period.
Love and blessings,
Alethia Penn Shelton, Preschool Director
Marti Barnes, Preschool Board Chair
