On June 3, NSUMC will host Kevin Spears "Kalimba Man" for a free concert and kalimba-making workshop. Mr. Spears is a world-renowned performer and instrument-maker. He was invited by Dr. Aaron Carter-Enyi to give the inaugural presentation of the Morehouse College's Making African Instruments Lecture Series in February. Since then, Atlanta University Center students have been busy making kalimbas (also known as mbiras or thumb pianos) using Universal Laser Systems cutters/engravers in the Morehouse Makerspace and Spelman Innovation Lab.
The NSUMC workshop is the first time this innovative and culturally-relevant activity has been made available to the public. The concert and workshop are free and open to the public. Afro-Caribbean food, including chicken, rice, vegetables and plaintains, will be available during the concert for a suggested donation of $5. Kalimba kits are available for $40 and up and all proceeds will benefit the Music and Worship Arts ministry at NSUMC. Please register in order to attend at makingafricaninstruments.org
